Interview By Aleta WatsonThe ever inspirational Perri ‘Pebbles’ Reid is partnering with ESSENCE magazine in search for the next ‘R&B Star.’ Recently, auditions began in the Southern music mecca, Atlanta, GA. Pebbles offered Singersroom exclusive behind the scenes coverage of this groundbreaking competition held in the historic Woodruff Arts Center. Joined by Rozonda ‘Chilli’ Thomas, record producer, Brian Michael Cox, and Q. Parker of 112, the auditions brought out the country’s best talent.

The ‘R&B Star’ hopefuls all came in anticipation of hearing those life changing words from Pebbles, “Come get your star!” While everyone did not progress to the next round, the judges did offer up inspiration and constructive criticism to all who came before the judging panel.
Cox’s advice simply encouraged contestants to, “Be yourself and emote!” While Q reminded the over-the-top aspiring singers that, “Simplicity is best.”
“For 17 years we’ve been working to showcase the best R&B acts at the Essence Music Festival and this year with Essence & Pebble Present R&B Star, we’re expanding our commitment to music by leveraging the festival and our media platforms to cultivate new talent who will keep the strong tradition of R&B alive and well,” says Lesley Pinckney, General Manager for Essence.com.
With judges like the visionary, Pebbles Reid aboard, this year’s ESSENCE Music Festival is sure to usher in a new element of R&B that we have yet to see. The auditions will continue in New York and Los Angeles over the next weeks.
